I've just arrived home from a weekend in Calais. I went over with 3 guys from my church to help with the refugee crisis. Obviously, I had to take my camera gear and document the weekend!
This is a frame taken from a clip in 'The Jungle'.
I realise that this young man might look like a terrorist. The timber he's holding even looks like a weapon. The reality of the situation is that he is holding the remains of his shelter after a fire broke out the night before.
The media will probably tell you that this was arson. That it was terrorism or something. What actually happened was that a candle had set a tent on fire and it spread. There's very limited access to electric in the Jungle so the residents use candles for light; makes sense, doesn't it? Someone had fallen asleep without blowing out the candle, and we all know that's not a good idea. I can't quite remember the number, but over 100 people lost their shelters that night.
This young man was trying to rescue what he could but he just looked lost. He looked hopeless.
I would urge you not to believe everything the media says. These are decent people who are just trying to find a better life. They are friendly and welcoming. A guy even gave me half of his slice of naan bread as I was keeping an eye on our truck. It's the simple things, right?
I have loads more to say and have tonnes of footage to go through but I will be posting more stuff over the next week or two.
Thanks for reading and feel free to share!
P.S. I also think the timber the guy is holding looks like a cross. Just saying...
